Popular Techniques

  • The Beginner’s Snowplow Stop

For the majority, learning how to stop when roller skating starts with the snowplow. It is a basic technique that helps beginners control their speed and come to a gradual stop. This is how to perform it:

  1. Skate with a little speed in a two-foot glide position
  2. Point your toes slightly inward to create a ‘’V’’ shape with your feet
  3. Gently bend your knees
  4. Lean back slightly putting some weight on your heels
  5. Start moving your feet outward, creating friction with the ground as you gradually come to a stop

The key to this movement is control and accuracy. Try to avoid any erratic or jerky movements.

  • The T-Stop

Here’s how to perform a T-stop:

  2. Lift one foot slightly whilst shifting your weight to the other foot
  3. Bring the lifted foot behind you, forming a “T” shape with your wheels
  4. Apply gentle pressure on the dragging foot, allowing the wheels to create friction with the ground

This is an excellent technique for those looking to advance their skills. However, beginners may wish to focus on less advanced ways of stopping first.

  • The Power Slide

It involves sliding one foot sideways while keeping the other foot straight. This is how it is done:

  1. Start with a balanced skating stance
  2. Lift one foot and slightly turn it inward while keeping the other foot straight
  3. Place the lifted foot back on the ground, creating a sideways sliding motion
  4. Control the slide and gradually come to a stop
